What is an eco friendly funeral?

The conventional process for laying people to rest is surprisingly hard on the environment. Fortunately, there are many ways, large and small ways in which we can help minimise this.

Below are ways we can make your loved one’s funeral eco-friendly.

Eco Burials

The best way to reduce your impact on the environment in death is to allow your body to feed the earth. This is at the heart of Become Funerals. An eco-friendly burial site is usually a native forest or parkland where people are buried in a way that promotes natural decomposition. Traditional coffins are replaced with decomposable ones. There are many options including untreated timber, recycled materials, wicker, bamboo and cloth shrouds.

Momentos, programs, and notices

One of the most gratifying parts of our job is to find alternatives to the traditional ways of marking someones passing with material artefacts. We ordinarily send out death notices and service invitations digitally and, where printing is required, we use recycled paper and enviro-friendly printing and inks.

We can also help you set up social media invites and memorials. All floral arrangements are sustainably sourced natives and thank-you gifts may be native seeds.

Our Environmental Policy

We are committed to making our funeral and after-death services environmentally sustainable. We seriously take into consideration any and all resources that we use.

Reduce

We commit to reducing:

  • Our use of primary resources like electricity, water and fuel,
  • Our secondary use of these resources through our suppliers,
  • Our waste,
  • Our use of non-biodegradable chemicals and materials.
  • We use only natural soaps and body care products, essential oils, and water.
  • We will only use harsh chemicals when there is no available alternative, or when required by law.

Re-use

Where we can’t reduce our use of resources, we commit to:

  • Using recycled materials, such as 100% post consumer recycled paper,
  • Reusing, recycling or donating waste products,
  • Composting waste products where possible.

Track

We are committed to tracing the impact of our operations. This includes asking our suppliers to report on their emissions and resource use. We track our use of resources, carbon emissions, and waste outputs.

Offset

Where we must use resources, or where carbon emissions are impossible to avoid, we commit to offsetting those emissions twofold.
